Who Are We

The ESSENCE Program

The ESSENCE Program is a 501c3 not-for-profit supplemental educational service that seeks to strengthen the academic performance of students in K-12 Louisiana public and charter schools by using information about the life, history, and culture of African American Louisiana as foundation for direct student instruction and teacher professional development. ESSENCE operates on the premise that providing students the opportunity to see themselves in what and how they learn will give them knowledge and tools needed for rigorous, sustainable intellectual, social, and civic development.  ESSENCE also believes that providing teachers instructional footing in African American Louisiana life, history, and culture will enhance the quality and range of resources they can use to help students meet and exceed state and national standards.
